Career as a Photojournalist
Her career began as a photojournalist while living in Lisbon, Portugal. In 1974, a revolution erupted in Portugal, during which time she worked for The Guardian newspaper of London, England. After moving to the United States and residing in San Francisco, California, she encountered a different kind of revolution: the ‘gay revolution.’ She continued to work for The Guardian and documented developments of gay human rights movements. During the 1980s, she became a travelogue photographer and traveled the world extensively. Her travel photo archives are an extensive collection of high-quality photographs of many parts of the world—national symbols, historical monuments, popular travel destinations, including the “seven wonders of the world,” etc.
Career as an author
While visiting Berlin (West) in 1984, she saw a different kind of Germany: “two Germanys”—divided countries and divided people. West Berlin was entirely surrounded by the so-called Berlin Wall, built by Communist Russia (USSR) with border guards who would shoot any escapees from Communist East Germany. Berliners were like living inside a cage. As long as the nation and its people were divided, Second World War never ended for the German people, unlike Japan. This living condition of the post-Nazism in Germany gave the author a profound impact; she began to think of the reality of ‘war and people.’ This was a turning point in her career: she became a book author. As a photojournalist and reporter, she had interviewed hundreds of people who lived through during the Nazi regime and what happened to them. The book title is Testimony of the Twentieth Century: Before and After the Berlin Wall.
